Regular checks can alert you to changes in colour, texture, or any signs of water condensation that may indicate an issue.

Good airflow in the attic is key to its proper functioning. Moving air dries out moisture and moves spores along - and out - of the attic. Blocked soffits, vents, or other air-flow issues can shift or degrade insulation and are the top causes for mold in an attic. 

Insulate

One of the most important renovations you can do to prevent mold from growing in the attic and improve your overall home is to upgrade or install more insulation. Insulation helps with ventilation, resists moisture and helps with things like energy loss and temperature control. 

Route Vents to the Outdoors

One of the most common reasons for mold in the attic is bathroom or kitchen exhaust vents that have been routed to lead into the attic. This is one of the worst things you can do because heated, moisture laden air is deposited into your attic where it can quickly degrade insulation, cause condensation across roof sheathing, and spawn a mold infestation. 

Inspect Your Roof

The other part of a healthy attic is a healthy roof. Shingles generally need replacing every 25-30 years, but heavy rain, ice, wind, or snow storms, and trees or other debris can damage shingles, soffits or vents. Regularly checking the exterior of your home and paying attention to potential damage or roofing issues can help prevent attic mold inside.
