How to Prevent Black Mold Regrowth After Remediation

Published on July 10, 2024

After your mold remediation in Vaughan, MoldTech recommends that you implement preventative measures to avoid reinfestation. We always provide our clients our favourite tips and tricks for avoiding black mold — but following them is up to you. When it comes to black mold removal, our work is only the first step, its the follow up you do that prevents repeat visits and ensures your home is healthy and mold free. The following is a sample of what advice we might give after mold removal in Vaughan.

Four Steps to Preventing Mold

mold remediation vaughanMold is tricky to shake once it’s taken hold in your home, making prevention worth your time and money. When it comes to preventing mold growth, we tell our clients to prioritize four things.

Control Humidity Levels

Mold requires water to thrive, so by controlling the amount of moving, airborne moisture, you can control this key ingredient and prevent many mold infestations from beginning. Humidity gives that sticky, damp skin feeling during the heart of summer; it’s simply water (moisture) that has vaporized and is now airborne.

Humidity can build in houses with water (such as from a leak or flood) and poor airflow. Some families like to add humidity during the winter months when the air is colder and dryer — dry air can cause itchy skin and eyes. The most important thing to remember about humidity is balance: you want your home to hover around 50% humidity, neither too moist nor too dry. MoldTech suggests using inexpensive sensors to monitor your indoor humidity.

Ventilate

Air movement is the second-most important thing. Moving air dries moisture and can move spores out and away from areas at risk of mold growth. There’s a reason bathrooms with poor ventilation get mold — without air movement, moisture gets stuck, and mold can take hold.

Adding ventilation is sometimes as easy as opening a window, but we can advise you on the best strategy for your mold-prone rooms.

Prevent Leaks and Floods

It doesn’t take a lot of water to start a mold infestation. One minor but persistent drip from a leaky faucet or sweating pipe is more than enough moisture to spark a mold infestation. This is where regular maintenance and inspection will help: by monitoring under sinks, near plumbing, and around bathtubs and laundry rooms, you will notice leaks and drips before they worsen.

Sometimes the worst happens and there’s a flood or unexpected pipe break. In this instance, we suggest moving quickly and getting the air moving using fans or dehumidifiers while you mop up excess water.

Clean, Clean, Clean!

We’re passionate about cleaning at MoldTech, whether it's before, during or after black mold removal. Cleaning is the best way to remove organic particles that mold may eat, spores that have settled on surfaces, and monitor areas that are at risk. Cleaning is a simple but highly effective mold prevention strategy — and it also helps your home look great!
